It is the oldest surviving blast furnace site in Japan, and was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2015. The first Western-style blast furnace built in Japan in 1858. Construction of a temporary blast furnace began in Hashino in June, and operations began in December. In 1860, two blast furnaces, No. 1 and No. 2, were built, and the temporary blast furnace was renovated to become No. 3 blast furnace. It is the oldest surviving blast furnace site in Japan, and was also Japan’s first commercial blast furnace. The iron ore supplied to this blast furnace was the Hashino Iron Mine, 2.6 kilometers south of the blast furnace. In 2015, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name "Hashino Iron Mine." It is a component part of the "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining."
