At the foot of Mt. Hakodate, which exudes an exotic atmosphere, Motoizaka,
a slope that runs from the harbor near the site of the old customs house
(now the Maritime Self-Defense Force's Hakodate Base) to Motomachi Park,
through Motomachi and Suehiro-town to a corner of the group of brick warehouses
on the harbor, former the Hakodate Ward Public Hall and Hakodate Orthodox
Church stand on the hill, and along the harbor are brick buildings among
which remain uniquely shaped houses that combine Japanese and Western styles.
In 1779, the shogunate established a Bugyosho (magistrate's office) in
this area in preparation for the threat of Russia, and after the Meiji
era, the Hakodate branch office of the Hokkaido Development Commission
was established here, making it a political, economic and cultural center.

| KUSHIRO Marsh |
the largest marshland in Japan |
01N001 |
 |
The largest marshland in Japan, the Kushiro Marsh, is designated as a national
natural monument, and as such maintains a unique Hokkaido-like landscape.
It is also home to precious flora and fauna, including the Japanese crane
(Red-crowne crane), a national special natural monument. In 1980, the center
of the marshland became the first Ramsar Convention registered wetland
in Japan. After that, almost the entire area, including the marshland surrounding
area, was designated as a national park. There are several observation
decks within the national park, so you can enjoy magnificent views. You
can also take the special train "Kushiro Marshland Norokko" operated
by JR Hokkaido from April to October, or the tourist train "SL Winter
Marshland" that runs mainly on weekends and holidays from January
to March, to enjoy the spectacular view of the Kushiro Marshland and the
Kushiro River that gently meanders through it, and encounter rare wildlife
such as Japanese crane and Ezo deer.BTW, don't forget that here is a bear
habitat!

| ASAHIYAMA Zoological Park |
northernmost zoo in Japan |
01C002 |
 |
Asahiyama Zoo, which opened as the northernmost zoo in Japan, does not have any unusual animals. The animals are common in zoos and familiar to Hokkaido. This zoo creates an environment where each animal can demonstrate their unique abilities, behaviors, and sensitivities, and uses a method of exhibiting them called "behavioral exhibits." Instead of the "morphological exhibits" that focus on showing the animals' appearance, which are common in Japanese zoos, this zoo has attracted attention by introducing "behavioral exhibits" that show their behavior and lifestyle. This zoo creates a comfortable and natural environment for the animals, allowing you to see them in a realistic way. Asahiyama Zoo has a track record of breeding animals that live in cold regions, and Polar Bears, Amur Leopards and Scops Owls are some of the first animals in Japan to be successfully bred naturally in captivity.
