Lake Mashu (Teshikaga Town) |
Hokkaido is the northernmost island of the Japanese archipelago, the second
largest after Honshu island.
Although it is the northernmost in Japan, it is at almost the same latitude as major American and European cities such as Chicago and Rome.
Surrounded on all four sides by the Pacific Ocean, the Sea of Japan,
and the Sea of Okhotsk, it boasts majestic and beautiful scenery. Almost
the entire area has a subarctic humid climate. There is a large temperature
difference between summer and winter, and it is a heavy snow area in winter.
It is not affected much by the rainy season or typhoons.
The area, which was called Ezo, and whose indigenous people are the Ainu
people, was renamed Hokkaido in 1869. Since then, full-scale development
has progressed. |
