mountainous, with mountain ranges towering in the eastern and western parts
of the prefecture. The Mogami River, which flows through the center of
the prefecture, is also known as the "mother river" as many of
the prefecture's residents live in its basin. The entire prefecture is
designated as a heavy snow area. The prefecture is divided into four areas:
