SHINJO Festival one of famouse float festivals n Japan
useful information
The Shinjo Festival is a float festival held every year from August 24th to 26th. Its history is long, dating back to 1756 when it was held to bring hope to the people of the domain who had been devastated by the great famine of the previous year, and to pray for a good harvest. A historical picture scroll unfolds one after another, including a procession of 20 floats competing for splendor, an ancient procession of 200 samurai and priests, and an elegant dance performed at the ruins of Shinjo Castle. It is one of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The floats are reproductions of Kabuki and fairy tales, and are free to decorate in various ways, except for the mandatory decoration of mountains, cherry blossoms, peonies, pine trees, and waterfalls.
