| Yamaguchi Ken ("Ken" in Japanese means prefecture) is located
in the Chugoku region, at the westernmost tip of Honshu Island. Its capital
is Yamaguchi City, but Shimonoseki City, at its westernmost end, is the
largest city. The southern part of the prefecture, facing the Seto Inland
Sea, is home to a variety of industries, including the chemical industry,
and today forms part of the Setouchi Industrial Region. Furthermore, fisheries
and agriculture are thriving throughout the prefecture. The prefecture
is also blessed with tourist attractions, such as the Akiyoshidai limestone
caves, Japan's largest karst plateau, and the castle town of Hagi. Because
the northern part of the prefecture faces the Sea of Japan, the southern
part faces the Seto Inland Sea, and the central part is mountainous, there
are significant differences in climate within the prefecture. The prefecture
is said to be divided into eight metropolitan areas. |
