| Shimane Ken ("Ken" in Japanese means prefecture) is located in
western Honshu, on the west side of the San'in region. Its capital is Matsue
City. The remote Oki Islands have been a place of exile since ancient times,
which led to the spread of Kyoto culture and the development of a unique
culture on these islands. The prefecture has a relatively mild climate
throughout, but there is a lot of rain throughout the year. The population
is the second smallest in Japan, after neighboring Tottori Prefecture.
As the prefecture faces the Sea of Japan, fishing is a thriving industry,
wth red snow crab being one of its main industries. As for tourist attractions,
Izumo Taisha Shrine is the prefecture's largest tourist destination. |
