Wakayama Ken ("Ken" in Japanese means prefecture) is located
in the Kinki region of Honshu, Japan, on the southwest side of the Kii
Peninsula, Japan's largest peninsula.
Its capital is Wakayama City. The large mountainous area in the southern part of the prefecture is home to the Kumano Kodo (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), which has been used for over 1,000 years for the consistent purpose of Kumano faith, which flourished as Japan's largest sacred site. Except for the mountainous areas, the climate is warm throughout the year due to the influence of the Kuroshio Current flowing offshore, but many typhoons make landfall from summer to autumn. |
