| Nara Ken ("Ken" in Japanese means prefecture) is an inland prefecture
located in the Kinki region, inland of the Kii Peninsula. Its prefectural
capital is Nara City. The northwestern part, with its gently sloping topography
including the Nara Basin, is included in the Osaka metropolitan area due
to its convenient transportation access to Osaka. This region has been
the site of the Yamato Imperial Palace and capital since ancient times,
but in 710 the capital was moved to present-day Nara City/Yamatokoriyama
City, marking the beginning of the Nara period. As a result, the prefecture
is blessed with a wealth of historical and cultural assets, including cultural
properties and Buddhist structures designated as World Heritage Sites.
More than 90% of the prefecture's total population lives in this area.
While the southern region is mostly mountainous, it is also home to three
sacred sites in the Kii Mountain Range and pilgrimage routes, including
the Kumano Kodo, which are also registered as World Heritage Sites. The
climate in all parts of the prefecture is quite hot in the summer and bitterly
cold in the winter. |
