Lake BIWA

| Shiga Ken ("Ken" in Japanese means prefecture) is located in
the Kinki region of Japan. Its capital is Otsu City. Otsu Station is only
a 10-minute train ride from Kyoto Station, giving the prefecture strong
ties to Kyoto. Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake, is the prefecture's symbol.
It has been a key location for land transportation since ancient times,
and from the Middle Ages to the early modern period, it was said that "he
who controls this land controls the world." The merchants who once
came from present-day Shiga Prefecture were known as Omi merchants (Omi
was the former name of the region), and were renowned as one of Japan's
three greatest merchants. Today, it is one of western Japan's leading industrial
prefectures. Furthermore, thanks to Lake Biwa, Shiga is the only inland
prefecture with many fishing ports, and the fishing industry is thriving.
With the exception of a few areas, due to Lake Biwa, the climate is relatively
mild. The area is divided into four areas, centered around Lake Biwa: South
side of Lake (Konan), East side of Lake (Koto), North side of Lake (Kohoku),
and West side of Lake (Kosei). |
