| Ishikawa Ken ("Ken" in Japanese means prefecture) is a long,
narrow prefecture located in the Hokuriku region facing the Sea of Japan.
Its capital is Kanazawa City. Since the Middle Ages, culture has flourished,
centered around the castle town of Kanazawa City, and highly artistic traditional
techniques have been passed down to the present day. The climate has relatively
little sunshine, and in winter, seasonal winds cause low temperatures and
many snowy days. Thunderstorms are common in winter, and the simultaneous
occurrence of snowfall and thunder is rare worldwide. The Noto region in
the northern part of the prefecture, which includes the Noto Peninsula,
suffered extensive damage from a major earthquake in January 2024 and heavy
rains in September of the same year, and is currently in the process of
recovery. |
