| Toyama Ken ("Ken" in Japanese means prefecture) is located on
the Sea of Japan side of the Chubu region, in the center of the region
known as the Hokuriku region. Its capital is Toyama City. It is separated
on three sides by steep mountain ranges, excluding the northern part facing
the Sea of Japan. The entire prefecture is designated as a heavy snow
area in winter, but temperatures are high in summer due to the Foehn phenomenon.
In terms of its main industries, Toyama Prefecture is blessed with abundant
water resources, which it has used to generate hydroelectric power, successfully
transforming its traditional industries of agriculture and fishing into
one of the leading industrial regions on the Sea of Japan side. The prefecture
also has a wealth of tourist attractions that make use of its rugged terrain,
such as the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, a mountain sightseeing route
that opened in 1971. |
