| Niigata Ken ("Ken" in Japanese means prefecture) faces the Sea of Japan and stretches from the northeast to the southwest in a long, narrow strip. It has a long coastline and has remote islands such as Sado Island and Awashima Island. It is known as one of Japan's leading rice-producing regions. The inland area is one of the world's snowiest areas, and there are many ski resorts. The prefecture is divided into four areas: Joetsu, Chuetsu, Kaetsu, and Sado. |
