Kumamoto ("Ken" in Japanese means prefecture) is located in the central part of Kyushu Island in the Kyushu region of Japan. It faces the Ariake Sea, Yatsushiro Sea, and East China Sea. The prefectural capital is Kumamoto City. The climate is warm throughout the prefecture, except for the mountainous Aso region. It is broadly divided into three regions: northern, central, and southern. Agriculture and fishing are thriving, but in recent years, the area has become home to a cluster of semiconductor-related companies, earning Kyushu the nickname "Silicon Island".
