Kanagawa Ken ("Ken" in Japanese means prefecture) is located in the southwestern part of the Kanto region and forms part of the greater Tokyo area. Its capital is Yokohama City and is divided into six regions, including the Yokohama area. In the Middle Ages, the first shogunate, known as the Kamakura Shogunate, was established in Kamakura, laying the foundation for subsequent samurai rule. Furthermore, the prefectural capital, Yokohama City, rapidly developed from a small fishing village into a huge city following the opening of Yokohama Port at the end of the Edo period. The climate is relatively mild, except in mountainous areas such as Hakone. There are many commercial and industrial establishments, with the chemical industry ranking first in Japan. It has many tourist attractions and boasts one of the highest tourist numbers in Japan.
