TSURUOKA's Hina Sweets |
sweets for offering at the Hina Dolls' Festival |
|

In Tsuruoka, people decorate their houses with Hina dolls for Hina Festival,
and there is a culture of offering brightly colored, cute, high-quality,
fresh sweets called "Ohina-gashi" to the Hina decorations. Hinamatsuri
is held annually on March 3rd, and is also known as the "Peach Festival,"
an annual event to pray for the happiness of girls and ward off evil spirits.
Hina sweets in Tsuruoka are made with "nerikiri" (fresh sweets)
and contain the various wishes of people. For this reason, confectioners
create unique Hina sweets in the form of colorful vegetables, fruits, fish,
etc., while responding to the tastes of customers who come to buy them. |
