HORAIJIMA Island |
a gourd-shaped small island |
|
HORAIJIMA Island is a small island in OTSUCH Bay, with a circumference of about 200 meters , and is shaped like a gourd with two hills, one large and one small. The smaller hill was where the OTUCHI Port Lighthouse was located, but it collapsed from the base in the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. It was rebuilt in December 2012. The design of the rebuilt lighthouse was chosen from among the townspeople. The red light represents the sun rising over the horizon, expressing a wish to brighten the town's future, while the main body, which is shaped like an hourglass, expresses a strong will to rebuild. There is BENTEN Shrine on the island, where a statue of Benten is enshrined, and it has long been revered as the guardian deity of abundant catches and safe navigation. Although HORAIJIMA Island is an island, you can walk across to it from the mainland via a breakwater. |

RYUSENDO Cave |
one of three largest limestone caverns in Japan |
|
|

RYUSENDO Cave is one of the three largest limestone caves in Japan, and
is designated as a national natural monument along with the bats that live
in the cave. The total length of the cave is known to be 4,088m, of which
700m is open to the public. There are still many unknown parts, and it
is believed that the total length may be over 5,000 meters, and investigations
are still ongoing. Eight underground lakes have been discovered, three
of which are open to the public. The mysterious underground lakes, which
were created over an eternity of time, shine in a deep blue color known
as "dragon blue." The temperature inside the cave is around 10℃
all year round, so light clothing is prohibited even in summer. |
