Most of Yamagata Ken ("Ken" in Japanese means prefecture) is mountainous, with mountain ranges towering in the eastern and western parts of the prefecture. The Mogami River, which flows through the center of the prefecture, is also known as the "mother river" as many of the prefecture's residents live in its basin. The entire prefecture is designated as a heavy snow area. The prefecture is divided into four areas: Murayama, Mogami, Okitama, and Shonai, each with its own culture and climate. |

Shinjo is an area that receives heavy snowfall, so it was difficult to
obtain fresh fish during the winter. As a result, people would grill Herring
that arrived as the snow melted, drink sake, and celebrate the arrival
of spring. Today, this has become a seasonal feature of spring in Shinjo. |
