Iwate Ken (Ken" in Japanese means prefecture) is located in the northern
part of the Tohoku region (Northeastern region), bordering Aomori Ken to
the north, Akita Ken to the west, and Miyagi Ken to the south. It is the
second largest prefecture in Japan after Hokkaido in terms of area. The
entire prefecture is designated as a heavy snow area. The prefecture is
divided into four areas: Morioka area, southern area, coastal area, and
northern area.
